How Many Medical Schools Are in Australia? Complete List of MD Programs (State-by-State) 2025-26

As of 2025-26, the Australian Medical Council (AMC) currently lists 23 Australian medical education provider entries across Australia.

Some university ranking lists show 20–22 because joint programs are counted as one. For example, the University of Newcastle / University of New England operates as a single joint medical program.

Important for Indian Students:

Australia does NOT have DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degrees like the USA. In Australia, all primary medical degrees are either Doctor of Medicine (MD — 4 years graduate entry) or Bachelor of Medical Studies / MBBS / BMedSc/MD (5–6 years undergraduate entry). Both lead to the exact same general registration and license to practice as a medical doctor with Ahpra.
