The UK’s medical degree runs 5–6 years across three stages: Undergraduate, Foundation, and Speciality Training, regulated throughout by the General Medical Council (GMC).
Split into pre-clinical subjects (Anatomy, Physiology, Ethics, Psychology, Biochemistry) and clinical subjects (Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics), taught through both lecture-based and problem-based learning methods.
F1 focuses on supervised patient care under close guidance; F2 builds independence and clinical decision-making, ending with a Foundation Programme Certificate of Completion (FPCC).
3–8 years depending on specialty, leading to consultant status, run through the relevant royal college. Routes to GMC registration include PLAB, recognized-body sponsorship, acceptable postgraduate qualifications, or CESR.

Alternate route: A one-year preparatory program (International Foundation in Medical, Biomedical & Health Sciences) is available for students who don’t clear UCAS entrance requirements directly — 75%+ leads to MBBS eligibility, while 65%+ allows entry into a 3-year Biomedical Science degree.

GMC registration is mandatory before undertaking direct patient care, and the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) allows entry onto the UK Specialist Register.
